Probably just about everyone knows that the first part of the Mass is known as the Liturgy of the Word. This is usually understood to mean that the texts proclaimed, sung, and preached during this part of the service come from the Holy Bible. It’s not human words which are primary, but God’s own words, for then the truth being spoken is guaranteed to advance our salvation!

But remember the words of the evangelist, Saint John: “The Word became flesh, and made His dwelling among us” (Jn 1:14a). It’s important to realize that “God’s Word” is another way to refer to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is a connection that we want to make as well.

Even when we read something that “on the surface” has nothing to do with Jesus, say a first reading from the Old Testament or some longwinded opinion of Saint Paul, we don’t want to forget this. Every Biblical reading is in some way “connected to” the Christ-Event! Perhaps the reading foreshadows the Lord in history or prophecy. Perhaps it adds insight into His life and work by poetic description. Perhaps it brings us closer to Him in prayer or urges some advance in theological thinking about Him by significant comment. No matter what, it is Christ Jesus who IS the Word!
